Hedge pruning and trimming in Port Melbourne, done properly
A hedge is the one plant in a Port Melbourne garden that is meant to be cut, and cut properly: flat faces, a slight taper so the bottom gets light, and clippings gone the same day. Aps Tree Removal trims and prunes hedges of every size across Port Melbourne and Melbourne’s inner bayside — from a knee-high box border to a 10 m pittosporum screen along a boundary.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Docklands (2 km), Spotswood (3 km), Albert Park (3 km), so a job in Port Melbourne is often paired with one next door. 2 of the reviews on this site are from Port Melbourne customers, and another 3 from Docklands, Spotswood and Albert Park.
A hard reduction is different from a trim: we take the height and width back to where you want them, cutting into older wood where the species can handle it, then shape what is left. Some hedges bounce back in a season; others need a second lighter cut to fill in. Api will tell you which you have.
Overgrown boundary hedges — the ones that have swallowed the path or leaned into next door — are cut back to a straight face, thinned where they are congested, and the base cleared so you can see what you have. If the neighbour’s side needs doing too, that can be arranged with them.

If the hedge is on the boundary, agree with the neighbour before it is reduced. We will happily quote both sides in Port Melbourne, and the result is far better cut together.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Port Melbourne?
Before anything is cut in Port Melbourne, the permit question comes first, and the answer depends on City of Port Phillip.
Port Phillip’s Community Amenity Local Law 2023 requires a significant-tree permit before pruning or removing a tree or palm on private land with a trunk circumference of 150 cm or more measured 1 m from its base — a multi-stemmed tree counts if its exterior stems add up to 150 cm, and so does a stump of that size.
The application takes a site plan, photographs or diagrams of the proposed work and, for a body corporate, the committee’s consent; the council arborist reviews it and the council asks for ten business days. Some pruning is exempt under the local law itself.
This permit is in addition to any planning permit: the council also publishes a clear guide to the state canopy-tree clause, and an online checker for both tests.

Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

What clients across Melbourne’s inner bayside say
Port Melbourne Hedge Pruning & Trimming — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Port Melbourne?
Yes, if the trunk is 150 cm around or more measured 1 m from the base (or the exterior stems of a multi-trunk tree add up to that): Port Phillip requires a significant-tree permit, decided by the council arborist in about ten business days, on top of any planning permit. The state canopy-tree clause applies to smaller trees near a boundary. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does hedge trimming cost in Port Melbourne?
Length, height, growth and access — with the clippings included. A regular annual trim in Port Melbourne costs far less than a first cut on a hedge that has had five years off. Api quotes free.
How long does it take?
A few hours for a standard trim. Reductions take longer and may need a second visit the following season to tidy the regrowth.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes — and where the far side is the neighbour’s, we will speak to them so both faces can be done properly.
What happens to the waste?
Sheets under the hedge as we cut, then raked, blown and chipped. The drive and the path are cleaner than when we arrived.
My hedge is bare at the bottom and too tall — can it be fixed?
Usually. Most hedge species will regrow from older wood if they are reduced in stages and the top is narrowed so light reaches the base. Cypress is the exception — it does not regrow from bare wood, so it can only be shaped, not restored. Api will tell you which you have.
