Hedge pruning and trimming in Princes Hill, done properly
Most hedge trouble in Princes Hill is size: the pittosporum screen that was 2 m when it went in is 7 m now and eating the path. We bring it back — in one cut if the species allows, in stages if it does not — and tell you honestly which it will be before we start.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Parkville (about a kilometre), Brunswick (2 km), Carlton (2 km), so a job in Princes Hill is often paired with one next door.
Formal hedges get string lines and a slight batter — narrower at the top than the bottom — so the base keeps its leaves. It is the detail that separates a hedge that stays dense for twenty years from one that goes see-through in five.
Pruning, as opposed to trimming, is for hedge plants that flower or fruit: we time the cut to the plant so you do not lose next year’s flowers, and prune by hand where shears would spoil it.

A tip from Api
If a hedge is over 3 m, get it cut by people with platforms rather than a ladder on a gravel path. Most hedge accidents are falls, not cuts.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Princes Hill?
Before anything is cut in Princes Hill, the permit question comes first, and the answer depends on Yarra City Council.
Yarra treats a tree as significant when its circumference is 125.66 cm or more — the equivalent of a 40 cm diameter — at ground level or at 1.5 m; for multiple trunks, measure all of them at both heights and add them, and if either total reaches the figure the tree is protected. Removing or destroying it needs a local-law permit, and the council may ask for a report from a suitably qualified arborist to justify the removal.
A planning permit can be required instead of, or as well as, the local-law permit: many Yarra properties carry heritage or vegetation overlays, and some have planning-permit conditions that protect particular trees. The planning department on 9205 5555 can check an address.
The state canopy-tree clause applies in the residential zones too.

Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

Princes Hill Hedge Pruning & Trimming — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Princes Hill?
Yes, if the trunk is 125.66 cm around (a 40 cm diameter) or more at ground level or at 1.5 m — Yarra calls that significant vegetation and requires a local-law permit, usually with an arborist’s report. Multi-trunk trees are measured with the trunks added together. Overlays and old permit conditions can require a planning permit as well. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does hedge trimming cost in Princes Hill?
Length, height, growth and access — with the clippings included. A regular annual trim in Princes Hill costs far less than a first cut on a hedge that has had five years off. Api quotes free.
How long does it take?
A morning for most Princes Hill hedges; a day for a long, tall screen or a hard reduction. We book to the season the hedge needs.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes. Narrow paths, hedges against a wall, and hedges you can only reach from the neighbour’s side — we deal with all of them, and speak to the neighbour if we need to.
What happens to the waste?
Sheets under the hedge, everything raked and chipped, driveway and path blown. The mulch is yours if you want it; otherwise it goes to a green-waste recycler.
My hedge is bare at the bottom and too tall — can it be fixed?
Often, yes: reduce the height, narrow the top, feed and water it, and give it a season. Lilly pilly, pittosporum, photinia and viburnum all come back; conifers largely do not.
