Affordable hedge trimming in Melbourne: what drives the price and how to keep it down

Everyone wants affordable hedge trimming, and almost nobody gets a straight answer about what it costs, because a hedge cannot be priced over the phone any more than a tree can. Two hedges of the same length can be a quick morning or a two-day job depending on how tall they are, what is behind them, and how long it has been since anyone cut them. This guide explains how a hedge job is priced, the choices that keep the price down without cutting corners, and how to read a quote so the cheapest one is not the one that costs you most.

How a hedge job is priced: the six things Api measures

There is no rate per metre that survives contact with a real garden, but there are six things that decide every hedge price, and four of them are in the homeowner's control.

Height and access are why Api asks about the far side of the hedge and the height of the fence before he visits, and why he will not price a tall hedge from a photo. The photo never shows the retaining wall on the neighbour's side.

Why little and often is the affordable option

The cheapest hedge to maintain is the one that gets trimmed regularly. That sounds like a sales line, so here is the horticulture behind it.

Gardening Australia's advice for a lilly pilly hedge is the same advice for nearly every formal hedge: trim it a little and often to make it bush up, and cut the tops level early rather than waiting for the plants to reach full height ^[3]. Every light cut into new growth makes the plant branch just behind the cut, so the face gets denser. The clippings are soft and few, the visit is quick, and the shape is always close to where it should be.

Leave the same hedge for three or four years and everything about the job changes. The shape is gone, so the cut has to go deeper to find it. The growth is woody, so the trimmer gives way to loppers and a saw. The waste is many times greater. On conifers, the cut cannot go past the green without leaving permanent brown holes, so the reduction has to be done in stages across seasons, which means more than one visit. On lilly pilly the hard cut is fine, and can even go to ground level in late winter ^[4], but the hedge is bare while it regrows.

The maths follows the horticulture. The regular customer pays for short visits with small waste. The rescue customer pays for a long job with bulk waste, and then pays again for the hedge to look right. Keeping hedge trimming affordable is mostly a matter of not letting the hedge get ahead of you.

Timing the cut to save money

Melbourne's growing season is long and front-loaded. The Bureau of Meteorology's Melbourne Airport averages show the wettest months in spring, 62.4 mm in November and 55.7 mm in October, with summer maximums averaging 26.7 degrees and July the driest and coldest month ^[9]. Hedges flush hardest through that wet spring and early summer.

That has two consequences for the bill. First, a trim timed just after the spring flush holds its shape longer than one done just before it, so you buy fewer cuts a year. Second, a hedge cut in the right season for its species recovers fastest and needs the least follow-up: spring-flowering hedges such as viburnum and photinia are cut after they finish flowering, and deadheading viburnum straight after flowering each year keeps it compact to the ground ^[5], which means no expensive rejuvenation cut later.

The cheapest approach for most Melbourne hedges is a seasonal hedge schedule: a firm cut at the right time for the species, one or two light tidies through summer, and nothing in the heat or the wind. What a hedge quote should include

Its guidance to tradespeople says a clear quote should state whether it includes transport to and from the job, what the labour covers, and any call-out, weekend or public holiday rates ^[2].

For a hedge, add these to the list.

The certificate of currency is the item people skip and the one that matters most. Consumer Affairs Victoria's advice is to ask to see it, because public liability insurance is what protects you and third parties against damage the workers may cause ^[1]. A hedge trimmer through a neighbour's window, a platform onto a car, a chipper on a driveway: these are exactly the moments an uninsured cheap quote becomes the most expensive one you ever accepted.

What is honestly a DIY job, and what is not

Affordable sometimes means doing it yourself, and Api will say so. A hedge that stands below head height, has clear access on both sides, and produces a couple of bags of clippings is a good weekend job with a sharp trimmer and a tarp.

Three things move it out of that category.

Height. Safe Work Australia's guide to tree work is direct: tree trimming or removal work should not be done from ladders ^[6]. A two-handed trimmer, a springy hedge and a ladder are how people end up in emergency departments, and a hire platform for a weekend is not cheap once you add the trailer and the time.

Powerlines. For a hedge or tree on your property, you are responsible for keeping it clear of the service line to your house, and Energy Safe Victoria says to clear growth before it comes within one metre of the insulated line in any direction ^[7]. Anything touching or close to street powerlines is for authorised powerline contractors only ^[8]. A conifer that has grown around the service line is not a DIY job at any price.

Seven ways to keep affordable hedge trimming affordable

Every one of these is something Api suggests to customers who ask how to keep the bill sensible.

1. Trim on a schedule. Two to four light cuts a year, timed to the species, is the cheapest hedge there is to own.
2. Clear both sides. Move the bins, the trailer and the pots, and unlock the side gate. Every minute the crew spends moving your things is a minute you pay for.
3. Talk to the neighbour. If the far face of a boundary hedge is on their side, agree access before the day. Cutting from one side only is slower and leaves a worse result.
4. Bundle the work. A hedge, a couple of tree prunes and a stump on the same visit cost less than three visits, because the travel and set-up are shared.
5. Keep the mulch. Chipped clippings on the beds save a tip fee and water the garden.
6. Do the low hedges yourself, if you want to. Pay for the tall ones, the boundary ones and the ones near lines.
7. Cut in the right season. A hedge cut at the right time holds its shape longer and needs fewer visits a year.

The same logic applies to keeping a commercial frontage tidy: a shopfront hedge on a regular cycle is a small standing cost, and a shopfront hedge rescued once a year is a large one, done at the worst time.
