Tree removal and pruning in Balaclava, done properly
In Balaclava (3183) a quote is easy to fit in, and the crew arrives with everything on the truck. Tree and palm removal, hazard pruning, canopy lifting and crown thinning are the bulk of what we do here, all under a qualified arborist and fully insured.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Ripponlea (about a kilometre), Elwood (about a kilometre), St Kilda (about a kilometre), so a job in Balaclava is often paired with one next door.
Pruning is about the right cut, not the most cuts. We remove deadwood and hazard limbs, lift the canopy off roofs, sheds and driveways, thin a dense crown so wind moves through it instead of pushing on it, and clear power-line and neighbour boundaries. Trees pruned properly stay healthy and need less attention; trees hacked back sprout weak regrowth and become a bigger problem in Balaclava gardens within a couple of seasons.
A removal starts with a look at the tree, the access and what is underneath it. Api decides whether it can be felled in one piece — rare in a suburb like Balaclava — or needs to come down in sections. A climber goes up, the limbs come off and are lowered on ropes where anything sits below, the trunk is blocked down, and the whole lot goes through the chipper on the street. The stump can be ground out the same day.

A tip from Api
If the tree is on or near the boundary, sort out with the neighbour whose it is before you book. We are happy to quote both sides of a fence in Balaclava, but we cut only with the owner’s say-so.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Balaclava?
Balaclava is in the City of Port Phillip area, and that decides whether a permit is needed before a tree comes down.
Port Phillip’s Community Amenity Local Law 2023 requires a significant-tree permit before pruning or removing a tree or palm on private land with a trunk circumference of 150 cm or more measured 1 m from its base — a multi-stemmed tree counts if its exterior stems add up to 150 cm, and so does a stump of that size.
The application takes a site plan, photographs or diagrams of the proposed work and, for a body corporate, the committee’s consent; the council arborist reviews it and the council asks for ten business days. Some pruning is exempt under the local law itself.
This permit is in addition to any planning permit: the council also publishes a clear guide to the state canopy-tree clause, and an online checker for both tests.

Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

Balaclava Tree Removal & Pruning — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Balaclava?
Yes, if the trunk is 150 cm around or more measured 1 m from the base (or the exterior stems of a multi-trunk tree add up to that): Port Phillip requires a significant-tree permit, decided by the council arborist in about ten business days, on top of any planning permit. The state canopy-tree clause applies to smaller trees near a boundary. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does tree removal cost in Balaclava?
A small ornamental in an open yard can be a couple of hundred dollars; a large gum over a house is a day with a crew and rigging. Everything in between is quoted to the tree, free, with the clean-up and chipping included.
How long does it take?
Most single-tree removals in Balaclava are done in a day, often a morning. Large trees over structures can take two. Api gives you the timing with the quote.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes — we do it every week in Balaclava. Rigging, hand-carrying and a compact chipper on the street cover almost every side path in the area.
What happens to the waste?
Chipped on the day and removed. If you would like the mulch or some firewood, say so when Api quotes and we will leave it stacked where you want it.
Can you save the tree instead of removing it?
That is the first question Api asks himself when he quotes. A healthy tree is worth keeping — for shade, for the street and for the value of the property — and good pruning is cheaper than removal. When it cannot be saved, he explains why.
