Tree removal and pruning in Merrimu, done properly
If a tree in Merrimu has become a worry — leaning after a storm, dropping limbs on the roof, lifting the paving, or simply too big for the block — Aps Tree Removal can remove it or bring it back under control. We are fully insured and led by a qualified arborist who has done this for more than 16 years.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Long Forest (3 km), Bacchus Marsh (4 km), Darley (4 km), so a job in Merrimu is often paired with one next door. 2 of the reviews on this site are from customers in Long Forest, Bacchus Marsh and Darley, next door to Merrimu.
Palms are their own job. They are heavy for their size, the fronds and seed pods are a mess, and the trunk fibre blunts saws. We take them down in short sections with the rigging set up so nothing lands where it should not, and we take the trunk away rather than leaving you with something that will not burn and will not rot.
Every tree job in Merrimu begins with Api on site. He looks at the species, the lean, the decay, what is under the drop zone and how the chipper will get close, then tells you what he would do — remove, reduce or leave alone — and what it will cost. Nothing is cut until you have that in writing.

A tip from Api
Autumn and winter are the best time to book pruning in Merrimu: deciduous trees are bare, so the structure is easy to read, and the wounds seal before the growing season. Removals we do year-round.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Merrimu?
Merrimu is in the Moorabool Shire Council area, and that decides whether a permit is needed before a tree comes down.
Moorabool puts it bluntly on its permit page: most trees and vegetation require a planning permit to be destroyed, removed or lopped. Native vegetation falls under Victoria’s native vegetation removal regulations, which usually mean a permit and an offset, supported by a Native Vegetation Removal Report from the state tool.
Other trees can be protected for local heritage, amenity or visual significance, or because they contribute to the waterways and catchments — the Werribee River and Lerderderg run through the shire — so the overlays on a title matter more here than in the suburbs.
The residential zones of Bacchus Marsh, Darley and Maddingley also carry the state canopy-tree clause. The shire’s planning team is on (03) 5366 7100.

Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

Merrimu Tree Removal & Pruning — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Merrimu?
Often, yes: Moorabool’s own guidance is that most trees and vegetation require a planning permit to be removed, destroyed or lopped — native vegetation under the state regulations, with an offset, and other trees where heritage, amenity or waterway overlays apply. The state canopy-tree clause applies in Bacchus Marsh’s residential zones too. Check with the shire before anything is cut. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does tree removal cost in Merrimu?
Ask for the quote to include stump grinding and green-waste removal so you are comparing like with like. Api’s quotes do; some do not, and the difference shows up on the day.
How long does it take?
Most single-tree removals in Merrimu are done in a day, often a morning. Large trees over structures can take two. Api gives you the timing with the quote.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes — we do it every week in Merrimu. Rigging, hand-carrying and a compact chipper on the street cover almost every side path in the area.
What happens to the waste?
Everything goes through our chipper on site. You can keep the mulch for the garden — it is good mulch — or we take it, along with the logs, and it goes to a green-waste recycler.
Can you save the tree instead of removing it?
If the tree is structurally sound, usually. A reduction takes weight and height off; thinning lets wind through; a lift gets it off the house. If it is decayed at the base or split, removal is the honest answer, and Api will say so.
