Bamboo removal and yucca removal in Melbourne, done properly
In Melbourne, Southbank, Carlton and Fitzroy and across inner Melbourne, the calls are the same: bamboo coming up in the lawn three metres from where it was planted, or yuccas that have outgrown the front garden and are pushing on the fence. We remove both at the root, protect the pipes and paving around them, and leave the bed clean.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Southbank (about a kilometre), Carlton (2 km), Fitzroy (2 km), so a job in Melbourne is often paired with one next door.
Bamboo removal is mostly digging. After the culms are cut and chipped, the rhizome mat is lifted — a clumping species comes out as one root ball; a running species means following every runner to its end, sometimes under a path or into next door. We rake the bed for fragments before backfilling because a missed piece is a new plant.
For bamboo we cut the culms to the ground and chip them, then excavate the rhizome mass — by hand along fences and pipes, by machine where there is room — following runners out to their ends. Clumping bamboo lifts out as one root ball; running bamboo means chasing rhizomes, sometimes under a path or into the neighbour’s side. What comes out goes on the truck, not into your green bin.

A tip from Api
If bamboo has come under the fence from next door, removing it on your side alone buys you a year. Talk to the neighbour; we will quote both sides together and it is cheaper for everyone.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Melbourne?
Melbourne is in the City of Melbourne area, and that decides whether a permit is needed before a tree comes down.
The City of Melbourne says plainly that it has no authority over trees on private property except those on its Exceptional Tree Register — 268 trees across the municipality chosen for outstanding size, age, habitat value, Aboriginal association or unusual form — which are protected through the planning scheme.
For a registered tree, any buildings or works inside its Tree Protection Zone, significant pruning, lopping or removal needs a planning permit. Nominations to the register are reviewed roughly every five years.
In the residential zones — Kensington, Parkville, Carlton, North Melbourne and parts of the rest — the state canopy-tree clause applies to large trees near the street or rear boundary.

Across Victoria since 15 September 2025
Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

What clients across inner Melbourne say
Melbourne Bamboo Removal & Yucca Removal — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Melbourne?
Only if the tree is one of the 268 on the City of Melbourne’s Exceptional Tree Register, which the planning scheme protects, or if it is a canopy tree near a boundary in a residential zone under the state-wide clause. The council states it has no authority over other private trees. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does bamboo & yucca cost in Melbourne?
Size, spread and access. Removing the roots is most of the work, so a plant that has been in the ground for years costs more than one planted recently — but it is a one-off cost, where cutting it back is a yearly one. Call 0422 856 090 for a free quote.
How long does it take?
Half a day for a couple of yuccas; a full day for an established bamboo stand. Best done when the Melbourne ground is soft enough to dig — autumn to spring.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes — most yuccas in Melbourne are in a side passage a metre wide, and most bamboo is along a fence. We dig by hand where machines will not go.
What happens to the waste?
Every piece goes on the truck — tops chipped, roots whole. None of it stays because all of it can regrow.
Will the bamboo or yucca come back after you remove it?
Cut off at the ground, both come back within months — that is why so many people in Melbourne are on their second attempt. Dug out at the root, they do not. We rake through for fragments before we backfill, and stand behind the result.
