Bamboo removal and yucca removal in Brunswick, done properly
Yucca is the easy one to underestimate. The trunk is soft, the leaves are sharp and the root ball is enormous, and a yucca cut at the base sends up a ring of new shoots within months. We dig the root ball out whole — including down the side of a house where a machine will not fit — so it is gone for good.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Princes Hill (2 km), Parkville (2 km), Travancore (3 km), so a job in Brunswick is often paired with one next door.
For bamboo we cut the culms to the ground and chip them, then excavate the rhizome mass — by hand along fences and pipes, by machine where there is room — following runners out to their ends. Clumping bamboo lifts out as one root ball; running bamboo means chasing rhizomes, sometimes under a path or into the neighbour’s side. What comes out goes on the truck, not into your green bin.
Where you want to keep bamboo for privacy, we prune it properly — old culms out, height reduced, base cleaned — and install a root barrier so it stays put. That is a good option for clumping bamboo; for running bamboo that has already escaped, we will tell you removal is the better choice.
Bamboo Removal & Yucca Removal in Brunswick — what we do
Bamboo removal
Culms chipped, rhizomes excavated and followed to the end.
Bamboo pruning & barriers
Screens thinned and reduced; root barrier where you keep it.
Yucca removal
Heads, trunks and the whole root ball out, by hand where needed.
Pipes & paving protected
Hand digging around footings, sewer lines and pavers.
A tip from Api
A yucca that has grown against a wall or near the sewer line should be dug out by hand, not pulled with a machine — the roots are wrapped around whatever is near them, and pulling breaks pipes. It is slower and it is the right way.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Brunswick?
The rule that applies to a tree in a Brunswick garden is the General Local Law (clause 2.5) — here is what it says.
In Merri-bek a Tree Works Permit is required to remove a mature tree, or to prune more than 15 per cent of its canopy, on private property. A mature tree is 8 m or taller with a single trunk diameter greater than 40 cm, or multiple trunks adding to more than 40 cm, measured 1.2 m above the ground; trees on the Significant Tree Register are covered regardless of size.
Pruning under 15 per cent needs no permit, but the council recommends an AQF Level 3 arborist and before-and-after photos. Where a tree is protected by an overlay or by a condition on an earlier planning permit, a planning permit (or an amendment) is the route instead, and the planning scheme takes precedence over the local law.
The rule sits in clause 2.5 of the General Local Law; the Urban Forest team on 9240 1111 handles questions.

Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

Brunswick Bamboo Removal & Yucca Removal — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Brunswick?
Yes, for a “mature tree” — 8 m or taller with a trunk diameter over 40 cm at 1.2 m (single or combined) — or a tree on the Significant Tree Register: Merri-bek requires a Tree Works Permit to remove it or to prune more than 15 per cent of its canopy. Trees protected by an overlay or a planning-permit condition need a planning permit instead. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does bamboo & yucca cost in Brunswick?
Bamboo is priced on the area of the stand and how far it has run; yucca on the size of the clump and how tight the access is. A single yucca in an open Brunswick front yard is a quick job; a bamboo screen that has gone under a slab is a day’s digging. Api quotes both free and in person.
How long does it take?
A day for most jobs, longer if runners have gone under paving that has to be lifted and relaid.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes — tight access is the normal case for this work and the quote allows for it.
What happens to the waste?
Taken away in full. Bamboo chip is not left as mulch — it is too easy for a piece of rhizome to hide in it.
Will the bamboo or yucca come back after you remove it?
Cut off at the ground, both come back within months — that is why so many people in Brunswick are on their second attempt. Dug out at the root, they do not. We rake through for fragments before we backfill, and stand behind the result.
