Bamboo removal and yucca removal in Cremorne, done properly
Bamboo and yucca share one habit that makes them the most-regretted plants in Cremorne: cut them down and they come straight back. Aps Tree Removal removes both the way that works — the tops chipped, the rhizomes and root balls dug out and taken away — across Cremorne, South Yarra, Richmond and Burnley and the rest of inner Melbourne.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are South Yarra (about a kilometre), Richmond (about a kilometre), Burnley (2 km), so a job in Cremorne is often paired with one next door. 2 of the reviews on this site are from customers in South Yarra, Richmond and Burnley, next door to Cremorne.
For bamboo we cut the culms to the ground and chip them, then excavate the rhizome mass — by hand along fences and pipes, by machine where there is room — following runners out to their ends. Clumping bamboo lifts out as one root ball; running bamboo means chasing rhizomes, sometimes under a path or into the neighbour’s side. What comes out goes on the truck, not into your green bin.
Bamboo removal is mostly digging. After the culms are cut and chipped, the rhizome mat is lifted — a clumping species comes out as one root ball; a running species means following every runner to its end, sometimes under a path or into next door. We rake the bed for fragments before backfilling because a missed piece is a new plant.

A tip from Api
If bamboo has come under the fence from next door, removing it on your side alone buys you a year. Talk to the neighbour; we will quote both sides together and it is cheaper for everyone.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Cremorne?
Before anything is cut in Cremorne, the permit question comes first, and the answer depends on Yarra City Council.
Yarra treats a tree as significant when its circumference is 125.66 cm or more — the equivalent of a 40 cm diameter — at ground level or at 1.5 m; for multiple trunks, measure all of them at both heights and add them, and if either total reaches the figure the tree is protected. Removing or destroying it needs a local-law permit, and the council may ask for a report from a suitably qualified arborist to justify the removal.
A planning permit can be required instead of, or as well as, the local-law permit: many Yarra properties carry heritage or vegetation overlays, and some have planning-permit conditions that protect particular trees. The planning department on 9205 5555 can check an address.
The state canopy-tree clause applies in the residential zones too.

Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

What clients across inner Melbourne say
Cremorne Bamboo Removal & Yucca Removal — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Cremorne?
Yes, if the trunk is 125.66 cm around (a 40 cm diameter) or more at ground level or at 1.5 m — Yarra calls that significant vegetation and requires a local-law permit, usually with an arborist’s report. Multi-trunk trees are measured with the trunks added together. Overlays and old permit conditions can require a planning permit as well. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does bamboo & yucca cost in Cremorne?
For bamboo, the area and how far it has run; for yucca, the size of the clump and the access. A young yucca in an open yard is quick; a mature bamboo screen under paving is a day’s digging. Free quotes, in person, and every piece taken away.
How long does it take?
Half a day for a couple of yuccas, a full day for an established bamboo stand. Api tells you at the quote.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes. It is the normal case for this work, and the quote allows for it.
What happens to the waste?
Taken away in full. Bamboo chip is not left as mulch — it is too easy for a piece of rhizome to hide in it.
Will the bamboo or yucca come back after you remove it?
Not if the roots come out, which is the whole point of how we do it. Bamboo can send up an odd shoot from a missed rhizome fragment in the first season; yucca can do the same from a piece of root. Both are easy to deal with when they are small, and we will come back if it happens.
