Bamboo removal and yucca removal in Lovely Banks, done properly
Aps Tree Removal has dug bamboo and yucca out of Lovely Banks gardens for more than 16 years, from a single yucca lifting the front path to a bamboo grove that has crossed two fences. Api quotes it free and explains exactly how the roots will be dealt with, because that is the whole job.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Moorabool (3 km), Corio (4 km), Norlane (5 km), so a job in Lovely Banks is often paired with one next door.
If you want to keep bamboo as a screen, we can prune it — thinning old culms, taking the height down, cleaning up the base — and install a root barrier so it stops spreading. That is a real option for clumping species; for a running species that has already escaped, removal is usually the honest advice.
A yucca is cut down first — heads bagged, trunks sectioned — and then the root ball is excavated. A mature clump has a root mass the size of a wheelbarrow, often wrapped around a sewer line or pressing on a footing, so around anything that matters we dig by hand and lift it out in pieces.
Bamboo Removal & Yucca Removal in Lovely Banks — what we do

Pipes & paving protected

A tip from Api
Sewer and water lines often run down the same side passage as the yucca. Digging by hand there is slower and it is the right way; a machine pulling a root ball out of a pipe run is how leaks start.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Lovely Banks?
The rule that applies to a tree in a Lovely Banks garden is Clause 52.37 of the Greater Geelong Planning Scheme — here is what it says.
Greater Geelong is one of the councils without a private-tree local law: when it reviewed tree protection on private land in 2024 its officers recommended strengthening the planning scheme and asking the state for a state-wide approach rather than a local law or a significant-tree overlay.
That state-wide approach arrived in September 2025 as Clause 52.37. The council publishes its own guide: a canopy tree is more than 5 m tall with a trunk over 0.5 m around at 1.4 m and a canopy of at least 4 m; a permit is needed to remove one anywhere on a vacant residential lot, or within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary where a house already stands. Council officers may assess the application only against the clause’s own purpose and decision guidelines, and a replacement tree — at least 6 m tall and 4 m wide at maturity — is the usual condition.
Vegetation and heritage overlays on the title apply on top, especially along the Barwon and the coast.

Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

Lovely Banks Bamboo Removal & Yucca Removal — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Lovely Banks?
Greater Geelong has no local law for trees on private land — its 2024 review chose not to introduce one — so the test is the state canopy-tree clause: a planning permit for a canopy tree on a vacant residential lot, or one near the front or rear boundary of a lot with a house, decided through VicSmart in about ten business days. Overlays on the title still apply. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does bamboo & yucca cost in Lovely Banks?
For bamboo, the area and how far it has run; for yucca, the size of the clump and the access. A young yucca in an open yard is quick; a mature bamboo screen under paving is a day’s digging. Free quotes, in person, and every piece taken away.
How long does it take?
Usually within a week or two of the quote. We finish a bed on the day we open it.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes. Most yuccas in Lovely Banks are in a side passage a metre wide and most bamboo is on a fence line; we dig by hand and carry the root balls out in sections.
What happens to the waste?
Chipped where we can, bagged where we cannot, and removed. The bed is raked and backfilled ready for whatever you plant next.
Will the bamboo or yucca come back after you remove it?
Not when the roots are out, which is the point of doing it this way. A stray shoot from a missed fragment in the first season is possible; it is easy to deal with and we come back if it happens.
