Bamboo removal and yucca removal in Flemington, done properly
In Flemington, Kensington, Ascot Vale and Travancore and across inner Melbourne, the calls are the same: bamboo coming up in the lawn three metres from where it was planted, or yuccas that have outgrown the front garden and are pushing on the fence. We remove both at the root, protect the pipes and paving around them, and leave the bed clean.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Kensington (about a kilometre), Ascot Vale (about a kilometre), Travancore (2 km), so a job in Flemington is often paired with one next door.
Where you want to keep bamboo for privacy, we prune it properly — old culms out, height reduced, base cleaned — and install a root barrier so it stays put. That is a good option for clumping bamboo; for running bamboo that has already escaped, we will tell you removal is the better choice.
A yucca removal starts with cutting the heads and trunks down and bagging the leaves — they are needle-sharp and full of sap. Then the root ball is dug out. On a mature clump that can be a metre across and half a metre deep, wrapped around pipes and pressing on footings, so we dig by hand where anything is close and take it out in sections.

A tip from Api
If bamboo is coming through from a neighbour’s garden in Flemington, removing your side only buys you a season. Talk to them — we will quote both sides together, which is cheaper for both of you.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Flemington?
Before anything is cut in Flemington, the permit question comes first, and the answer depends on City of Melbourne.
The City of Melbourne says plainly that it has no authority over trees on private property except those on its Exceptional Tree Register — 268 trees across the municipality chosen for outstanding size, age, habitat value, Aboriginal association or unusual form — which are protected through the planning scheme.
For a registered tree, any buildings or works inside its Tree Protection Zone, significant pruning, lopping or removal needs a planning permit. Nominations to the register are reviewed roughly every five years.
In the residential zones — Kensington, Parkville, Carlton, North Melbourne and parts of the rest — the state canopy-tree clause applies to large trees near the street or rear boundary.

Across Victoria since 15 September 2025
Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

What clients across inner Melbourne say
Flemington Bamboo Removal & Yucca Removal — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Flemington?
Only if the tree is one of the 268 on the City of Melbourne’s Exceptional Tree Register, which the planning scheme protects, or if it is a canopy tree near a boundary in a residential zone under the state-wide clause. The council states it has no authority over other private trees. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does bamboo & yucca cost in Flemington?
For bamboo, the area and how far it has run; for yucca, the size of the clump and the access. A young yucca in an open yard is quick; a mature bamboo screen under paving is a day’s digging. Free quotes, in person, and every piece taken away.
How long does it take?
Usually within a week or two of the quote. Bamboo is best removed when the ground is soft enough to dig — autumn to spring in Flemington.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes. Tight access adds time, not difficulty; we carry root balls out in sections and chip the tops on the street.
What happens to the waste?
Chipped where we can, bagged where we cannot, and removed. The bed is raked and backfilled ready for whatever you plant next.
Will the bamboo or yucca come back after you remove it?
Not if the roots come out, which is the whole point of how we do it. Bamboo can send up an odd shoot from a missed rhizome fragment in the first season; yucca can do the same from a piece of root. Both are easy to deal with when they are small, and we will come back if it happens.
