Bamboo removal and yucca removal in Chartwell, done properly
If the bamboo in your Chartwell garden is coming up in the lawn, or the yucca down the side of the house is now taller than the gutter, the fix is the same: get the roots out. We do it by hand around pipes, footings and pavers, by machine where there is room, and we take every fragment away.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Mount Cottrell (2 km), Tarneit (5 km), Truganina (7 km), so a job in Chartwell is often paired with one next door. One of the reviews on this site is from Chartwell customers, and another 3 from Mount Cottrell, Tarneit and Truganina.
If you want to keep bamboo as a screen, we can prune it — thinning old culms, taking the height down, cleaning up the base — and install a root barrier so it stops spreading. That is a real option for clumping species; for a running species that has already escaped, removal is usually the honest advice.
For bamboo we cut the culms to the ground and chip them, then excavate the rhizome mass — by hand along fences and pipes, by machine where there is room — following runners out to their ends. Clumping bamboo lifts out as one root ball; running bamboo means chasing rhizomes, sometimes under a path or into the neighbour’s side. What comes out goes on the truck, not into your green bin.

A tip from Api
Check the council rule below before removing a very large old yucca or a bamboo grove in Chartwell: most are well under any size threshold, but Api checks as part of the quote so there are no surprises.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Chartwell?
Before anything is cut in Chartwell, the permit question comes first, and the answer depends on Melton City Council.
Melton sits on the Victorian Volcanic Plain, where only about one per cent of the original grasslands and grassy woodlands survive, so native vegetation is tightly controlled: a planning permit is required from the council to remove, destroy or lop it under Clause 52.17, and inside the Urban Growth Boundary Clause 52.16 and the Native Vegetation Precinct Plans in the estate structure plans apply instead.
Threatened species and habitat can also bring in the Commonwealth EPBC Act. None of that touches a planted exotic in a suburban yard.
What does apply to every residential lot is the state canopy-tree clause — large trees near the street or rear boundary need a planning permit.

Across Victoria since 15 September 2025
Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

What clients across Melbourne’s outer west say
Chartwell Bamboo Removal & Yucca Removal — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Chartwell?
For native vegetation, yes — Melton requires a planning permit to remove, destroy or lop it under Clause 52.17 (Clause 52.16 inside the growth areas), and the Commonwealth can be involved on the western grasslands. For a planted exotic tree the state canopy-tree clause is what applies, if the tree is near a boundary in a residential zone. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does bamboo & yucca cost in Chartwell?
On the size of the root system and how it can be reached. Api quotes free and includes taking every piece away, which is part of doing it properly.
How long does it take?
Half a day for a couple of yuccas; a full day for an established bamboo stand. Best done when the Chartwell ground is soft enough to dig — autumn to spring.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes. Most yuccas in Chartwell are in a side passage a metre wide and most bamboo is on a fence line; we dig by hand and carry the root balls out in sections.
What happens to the waste?
Everything goes on the truck: culms and heads chipped, rhizomes and root balls loaded whole. None of it is left on site because all of it can regrow.
Will the bamboo or yucca come back after you remove it?
Cut off at the ground, both come back within months — that is why so many people in Chartwell are on their second attempt. Dug out at the root, they do not. We rake through for fragments before we backfill, and stand behind the result.
