Bamboo removal and yucca removal in Docklands, done properly
If the bamboo in your Docklands garden is coming up in the lawn, or the yucca down the side of the house is now taller than the gutter, the fix is the same: get the roots out. We do it by hand around pipes, footings and pavers, by machine where there is room, and we take every fragment away.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Southbank (2 km), Port Melbourne (2 km), Kensington (3 km), so a job in Docklands is often paired with one next door. 2 of the reviews on this site are from customers in Southbank, Port Melbourne and Kensington, next door to Docklands.
A yucca is cut down first — heads bagged, trunks sectioned — and then the root ball is excavated. A mature clump has a root mass the size of a wheelbarrow, often wrapped around a sewer line or pressing on a footing, so around anything that matters we dig by hand and lift it out in pieces.
After removal we rake through the bed for root fragments, backfill, and tell you what to watch for over the next season. Bamboo and yucca can both send up a shoot or two from a missed piece; we come back and deal with it if they do.
Bamboo Removal & Yucca Removal in Docklands — what we do
Bamboo removal
Culms chipped, rhizomes excavated and followed to the end.
Bamboo pruning & barriers
Screens thinned and reduced; root barrier where you keep it.
Yucca removal
Heads, trunks and the whole root ball out, by hand where needed.
Pipes & paving protected
Hand digging around footings, sewer lines and pavers.
A tip from Api
A yucca that has grown against a wall or near the sewer line should be dug out by hand, not pulled with a machine — the roots are wrapped around whatever is near them, and pulling breaks pipes. It is slower and it is the right way.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Docklands?
The rule that applies to a tree in a Docklands garden is the Exceptional Tree Register — here is what it says.
The City of Melbourne says plainly that it has no authority over trees on private property except those on its Exceptional Tree Register — 268 trees across the municipality chosen for outstanding size, age, habitat value, Aboriginal association or unusual form — which are protected through the planning scheme.
For a registered tree, any buildings or works inside its Tree Protection Zone, significant pruning, lopping or removal needs a planning permit. Nominations to the register are reviewed roughly every five years.
In the residential zones — Kensington, Parkville, Carlton, North Melbourne and parts of the rest — the state canopy-tree clause applies to large trees near the street or rear boundary.
Source: City of Melbourne — trees on private property. Read 13 September 2026; councils change their local laws, so Api checks the current rule when he quotes.
Across Victoria since 15 September 2025
Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

What clients across inner Melbourne say
Docklands Bamboo Removal & Yucca Removal — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Docklands?
Only if the tree is one of the 268 on the City of Melbourne’s Exceptional Tree Register, which the planning scheme protects, or if it is a canopy tree near a boundary in a residential zone under the state-wide clause. The council states it has no authority over other private trees. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does bamboo & yucca cost in Docklands?
On the size of the root system and how it can be reached. Api quotes free and includes taking every piece away, which is part of doing it properly.
How long does it take?
A day for most jobs, longer if runners have gone under paving that has to be lifted and relaid.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes — tight access is the normal case for this work and the quote allows for it.
What happens to the waste?
Removed in full, bed raked and backfilled ready to replant. Bamboo chip is never left as mulch.
Will the bamboo or yucca come back after you remove it?
Cut off at the ground, both come back within months — that is why so many people in Docklands are on their second attempt. Dug out at the root, they do not. We rake through for fragments before we backfill, and stand behind the result.
