Tree removal and pruning in Docklands, done properly
If a tree in Docklands has become a worry — leaning after a storm, dropping limbs on the roof, lifting the paving, or simply too big for the block — Aps Tree Removal can remove it or bring it back under control. We are fully insured and led by a qualified arborist who has done this for more than 16 years.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Southbank (2 km), Port Melbourne (2 km), Kensington (3 km), so a job in Docklands is often paired with one next door. 2 of the reviews on this site are from customers in Southbank, Port Melbourne and Kensington, next door to Docklands.
Crown reductions are measured, not guessed. We agree the finished height and spread with you, cut back to suitable growth points so the tree recovers with a natural shape, and never “top” a tree — a topped tree regrows weak, fast and dangerous, and ends up costing more.
Palms are their own job. They are heavy for their size, the fronds and seed pods are a mess, and the trunk fibre blunts saws. We take them down in short sections with the rigging set up so nothing lands where it should not, and we take the trunk away rather than leaving you with something that will not burn and will not rot.

A tip from Api
If you are thinking about removing a healthy tree because it is messy or shading the garden, ask about a reduction or a canopy lift first. It is often cheaper, it keeps the value and shade a mature tree adds to a Docklands property, and it avoids the permit question entirely for many trees.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Docklands?
Homeowners in Docklands ask this more than anything else, so here is the City of Melbourne’s rule as the council publishes it.
The City of Melbourne says plainly that it has no authority over trees on private property except those on its Exceptional Tree Register — 268 trees across the municipality chosen for outstanding size, age, habitat value, Aboriginal association or unusual form — which are protected through the planning scheme.
For a registered tree, any buildings or works inside its Tree Protection Zone, significant pruning, lopping or removal needs a planning permit. Nominations to the register are reviewed roughly every five years.
In the residential zones — Kensington, Parkville, Carlton, North Melbourne and parts of the rest — the state canopy-tree clause applies to large trees near the street or rear boundary.

Across Victoria since 15 September 2025
Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

What clients across inner Melbourne say
Docklands Tree Removal & Pruning — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Docklands?
Only if the tree is one of the 268 on the City of Melbourne’s Exceptional Tree Register, which the planning scheme protects, or if it is a canopy tree near a boundary in a residential zone under the state-wide clause. The council states it has no authority over other private trees. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does tree removal cost in Docklands?
Ask for the quote to include stump grinding and green-waste removal so you are comparing like with like. Api’s quotes do; some do not, and the difference shows up on the day.
How long does it take?
Most single trees are a morning; large ones a day. The quote gives you a start date and a finish time and we keep both.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes — most of the trees we remove are in backyards with a standard side path. Where there is no path at all we can still do it; it takes longer and the quote reflects that.
What happens to the waste?
Chipped on the street and taken away, or left as mulch if you want it. Larger logs are cut to size and removed unless you ask for firewood.
Can you save the tree instead of removing it?
Often, yes. Deadwooding, a crown reduction or a canopy lift solves most of the reasons people want a tree gone — it is dropping branches, it is over the roof, it is blocking light. Api will tell you which option makes sense for the tree in front of him.
