Stump removal and tight access in Cairnlea, done properly
Aps Tree Removal grinds stumps in Cairnlea most weeks: old cypress bases along boundaries, the gum stump in the middle of the lawn, the palm stump nobody could shift. Api quotes them free, the crew does them in an hour or two, and the ground is left level and ready for turf, garden or paving.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Deer Park (2 km), St Albans (2 km), Ardeer (2 km), so a job in Cairnlea is often paired with one next door. 1 of the reviews on this site are from customers in Deer Park, St Albans and Ardeer, next door to Cairnlea. Going by those reviews, the work around Cairnlea has mostly been tree removal (1) and clean-up and mulching (1).
On the day, the crew protects anything nearby with boards and sheets, checks the ground for stones and services, and grinds the stump in passes until the cutting wheel is 300–400 mm below the surface. The main lateral roots are followed out, the grindings are raked back into the hole and mounded, and the lawn or paving around it is blown clean.
We measure the stump, check for stones, pipes and cables — Dial Before You Dig where there is any doubt — and set up the grinder. The cutting wheel takes the stump down in passes to 300–400 mm below ground level, then follows the main lateral roots out. The grindings go back into the hole, mounded slightly because they settle, and the surrounding lawn or paving is left clean.

A tip from Api
If the stump is near a boundary, fence or retaining wall, we grind it from the accessible side with the guard on and the neighbour’s side protected. Tell Api if the tree was a shared one — it affects who owns the job.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Cairnlea?
The rule that applies to a tree in a Cairnlea garden is the Brimbank Local Laws — here is what it says.
Brimbank’s position is that trees on private property are the owner’s to look after; the council does not maintain them and treats disputes about neighbours’ trees as civil matters.
The exception is the Significant Tree Register: trees valued for size, age, health or cultural and environmental importance are recorded there and protected under the Brimbank Local Laws, and interfering with one draws an infringement per tree.
The state canopy-tree clause applies in Brimbank’s residential zones, so check the distance to the boundaries before assuming no permit is needed.

Across Victoria since 15 September 2025
Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

Cairnlea Stump Removal & Tight Access — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Cairnlea?
Only if the tree is on Brimbank’s Significant Tree Register, which the local laws protect, or if it is a canopy tree near the front or rear boundary under the state-wide clause. Ordinary garden trees on private land are the owner’s responsibility to manage. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does stump removal cost in Cairnlea?
Stump grinding is priced mainly on the stump’s diameter at ground level, how many there are, and the access. A single small stump in an open Cairnlea front yard is quick; a 900 mm gum stump down a side path is not. Api quotes free, and doing several at once is always cheaper per stump.
How long does it take?
Most stump jobs are booked within a week of the quote and finished in a couple of hours on the day.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes. Side paths, courtyards, terraces and stumps hard against a fence or wall are the norm in Cairnlea, and we carry the gear for them.
What happens to the waste?
The chips fill the hole; what is left over goes on the truck. You are welcome to keep them for mulch.
How deep do you grind, and can I plant or pave over the spot?
300–400 mm as standard, which suits lawn, garden beds and pavers. For a slab or a new tree in the same spot, tell Api and we grind deeper and take the grindings out.
