Stump removal and tight access in Ravenhall, done properly
A stump left behind in a Ravenhall garden is a trip hazard, a home for termites, a mower obstacle and, given time, a source of suckers. Aps Tree Removal grinds stumps out 300 to 400 mm below the surface — deep enough to plant over, turf or pave — and our narrow-access grinder gets down side paths and into courtyards that bigger machines cannot reach.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Deer Park (3 km), Burnside (3 km), Truganina (4 km), so a job in Ravenhall is often paired with one next door. 2 of the reviews on this site are from customers in Deer Park, Burnside and Truganina, next door to Ravenhall. Going by those reviews, the work around Ravenhall has mostly been tree removal (2) and clean-up and mulching (1).
We measure the stump, check for stones, pipes and cables — Dial Before You Dig where there is any doubt — and set up the grinder. The cutting wheel takes the stump down in passes to 300–400 mm below ground level, then follows the main lateral roots out. The grindings go back into the hole, mounded slightly because they settle, and the surrounding lawn or paving is left clean.
Palm stumps, multi-stem stumps and old stumps that have started to rot each behave differently under the grinder. Palm fibre clogs; multi-stems have a wide root plate; rotten stumps hide voids. We have done thousands in Melbourne’s outer west and price them accordingly, with no surprises on the day.

A tip from Api
Do not pour poison down a stump in Ravenhall and wait: it takes years, it can kill the shrubs around it, and the stump still has to come out in the end. Grinding takes an hour.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Ravenhall?
The rule that applies to a tree in a Ravenhall garden is Clause 52.17 of the Melton Planning Scheme — here is what it says.
Melton sits on the Victorian Volcanic Plain, where only about one per cent of the original grasslands and grassy woodlands survive, so native vegetation is tightly controlled: a planning permit is required from the council to remove, destroy or lop it under Clause 52.17, and inside the Urban Growth Boundary Clause 52.16 and the Native Vegetation Precinct Plans in the estate structure plans apply instead.
Threatened species and habitat can also bring in the Commonwealth EPBC Act. None of that touches a planted exotic in a suburban yard.
What does apply to every residential lot is the state canopy-tree clause — large trees near the street or rear boundary need a planning permit.

Across Victoria since 15 September 2025
Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

What clients across Melbourne’s outer west say
Ravenhall Stump Removal & Tight Access — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Ravenhall?
For native vegetation, yes — Melton requires a planning permit to remove, destroy or lop it under Clause 52.17 (Clause 52.16 inside the growth areas), and the Commonwealth can be involved on the western grasslands. For a planted exotic tree the state canopy-tree clause is what applies, if the tree is near a boundary in a residential zone. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does stump removal cost in Ravenhall?
Diameter, count and access. A small stump in an open Ravenhall yard is our minimum call-out; a large hardwood down a side path is more. Several at once are cheaper each. Api quotes free, often from a photo.
How long does it take?
One to two hours for a typical stump; a morning for a big one or a row of them. Same-week is common for Ravenhall.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes. Side paths, courtyards, terraces and stumps hard against a fence or wall are the norm in Ravenhall, and we carry the gear for them.
What happens to the waste?
Grindings back in the hole, mounded to settle, surplus taken away and the site raked clean. Soil backfill on request.
How deep do you grind, and can I plant or pave over the spot?
300–400 mm as standard, which suits lawn, garden beds and pavers. For a slab or a new tree in the same spot, tell Api and we grind deeper and take the grindings out.
