Stump removal and tight access in Hoppers Crossing, done properly
Stumps in Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Williams Landing and Werribee and the surrounding suburbs are our bread and butter: quick, clean and priced on the diameter and access rather than on the suburb. Fully insured, led by a qualified arborist, and no regrowth — the grinder takes the crown and the surface roots, not just the top.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Tarneit (4 km), Williams Landing (4 km), Werribee (5 km), so a job in Hoppers Crossing is often paired with one next door. 4 of the reviews on this site are from Hoppers Crossing customers, and another 16 from Tarneit, Williams Landing and Werribee. Going by those reviews, the work in Hoppers Crossing has mostly been tree removal (1) and clean-up and mulching (1).
If you plan to build, pave or plant a tree in the same spot, tell Api when he quotes: we can grind deeper, remove the grindings and backfill with soil instead, or take the main roots further out so the ground is ready for what comes next.
On the day, the crew protects anything nearby with boards and sheets, checks the ground for stones and services, and grinds the stump in passes until the cutting wheel is 300–400 mm below the surface. The main lateral roots are followed out, the grindings are raked back into the hole and mounded, and the lawn or paving around it is blown clean.

A tip from Api
If the stump is near a boundary, fence or retaining wall, we grind it from the accessible side with the guard on and the neighbour’s side protected. Tell Api if the tree was a shared one — it affects who owns the job.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Hoppers Crossing?
The rule that applies to a tree in a Hoppers Crossing garden is the Wyndham Planning Scheme — here is what it says.
Wyndham’s Community Amenity Local Law has no clause about removing or pruning trees on private property, so for most exotic garden trees no council permit is involved — the council’s own local-law review says as much.
Native vegetation is different: a planning permit is normally required to remove, destroy or prune it under Clause 52.17 of the Wyndham Planning Scheme, unless an exemption applies — for example a lot under 4,000 m² whose title carries no tree-protection restriction.
Wyndham is also building a Significant Tree Register, and trees in a heritage or vegetation overlay have their own controls. The council’s planning team on 1300 023 411 will confirm what sits on a particular title.

Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

What clients across Melbourne’s west say
Hoppers Crossing Stump Removal & Tight Access — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Hoppers Crossing?
Usually not for an exotic tree in a back garden: Wyndham has no local law covering trees on private land. A planning permit is needed for native vegetation (unless the lot is under 4,000 m² with no tree controls on the title), for anything on the Significant Tree Register, and for a canopy tree near the front or rear boundary under the state-wide canopy-tree clause. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does stump removal cost in Hoppers Crossing?
The diameter, the species (hardwood versus soft), whether there are roots to chase and whether the grinder fits through the gate are what set the price. Send Api a photo with something for scale and he will usually give you a firm figure over the phone for Hoppers Crossing.
How long does it take?
Quick — the set-up usually takes longer than the grinding. A few days’ notice is normally enough.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes. Side paths, courtyards, terraces and stumps hard against a fence or wall are the norm in Hoppers Crossing, and we carry the gear for them.
What happens to the waste?
The chips fill the hole; what is left over goes on the truck. You are welcome to keep them for mulch.
How deep do you grind, and can I plant or pave over the spot?
Below the surface by 300–400 mm, roots chased. Plant, turf or pave the next day; for concrete, have the grindings removed and the hole filled with compacted soil.
