Stump removal and tight access in Exford, done properly
The tree came out; the stump stayed. It happens all over Exford, usually because whoever removed the tree did not have a grinder, or could not get one down the side of the house. Aps Tree Removal can — with a compact machine that fits a standard gate and a full-size grinder for the open yards — and grinds every stump 300–400 mm below the surface.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Brookfield (3 km), Hopetoun Park (5 km), Cobblebank (6 km), so a job in Exford is often paired with one next door.
For tight access the sequence is the same with smaller gear: a compact grinder that fits a 750 mm gate, or a mini machine for courtyards. It is slower than the big grinder, but the result is identical — the stump is gone below the surface, not cut flush and left to sprout.
We measure the stump, check for stones, pipes and cables — Dial Before You Dig where there is any doubt — and set up the grinder. The cutting wheel takes the stump down in passes to 300–400 mm below ground level, then follows the main lateral roots out. The grindings go back into the hole, mounded slightly because they settle, and the surrounding lawn or paving is left clean.

A tip from Api
Do not pour poison down a stump in Exford and wait: it takes years, it can kill the shrubs around it, and the stump still has to come out in the end. Grinding takes an hour.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Exford?
Homeowners in Exford ask this more than anything else, so here is Melton’s rule as the council publishes it.
Melton sits on the Victorian Volcanic Plain, where only about one per cent of the original grasslands and grassy woodlands survive, so native vegetation is tightly controlled: a planning permit is required from the council to remove, destroy or lop it under Clause 52.17, and inside the Urban Growth Boundary Clause 52.16 and the Native Vegetation Precinct Plans in the estate structure plans apply instead.
Threatened species and habitat can also bring in the Commonwealth EPBC Act. None of that touches a planted exotic in a suburban yard.
What does apply to every residential lot is the state canopy-tree clause — large trees near the street or rear boundary need a planning permit.

Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

Exford Stump Removal & Tight Access — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Exford?
For native vegetation, yes — Melton requires a planning permit to remove, destroy or lop it under Clause 52.17 (Clause 52.16 inside the growth areas), and the Commonwealth can be involved on the western grasslands. For a planted exotic tree the state canopy-tree clause is what applies, if the tree is near a boundary in a residential zone. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does stump removal cost in Exford?
Diameter, count and access. A small stump in an open Exford yard is our minimum call-out; a large hardwood down a side path is more. Several at once are cheaper each. Api quotes free, often from a photo.
How long does it take?
An hour or two on site for most stumps, booked within the week for Exford.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes. We have never met a stump we could not reach; the narrower the access, the longer it takes, and the quote says so.
What happens to the waste?
The grindings go back in the hole unless you ask for them to be taken away and replaced with soil. Anything above that is loaded on the truck and the area is raked and blown clean.
How deep do you grind, and can I plant or pave over the spot?
Deep enough that nothing regrows and nothing gets in the way of what you do next — 300–400 mm as a rule. Tell Api what you plan to put there and he will grind to suit.
