Stump removal and tight access in Delahey, done properly
If you have just had a tree removed in Delahey — by us or by anyone else — the stump is the last job. We grind it 300–400 mm down, chase the main surface roots, backfill with the grindings and leave the area level and ready for lawn, garden or concrete.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Kings Park (2 km), Taylors Hill (2 km), Sydenham (2 km), so a job in Delahey is often paired with one next door. 3 of the reviews on this site are from customers in Kings Park, Taylors Hill and Sydenham, next door to Delahey. Going by those reviews, the work around Delahey has mostly been clean-up and mulching (3), tree removal (2) and stump grinding (1).
Old, rotten stumps and stumps with a wide root plate — the cypress and pine bases common along Delahey fences — take longer than fresh stumps but grind the same way. Palm stumps are fibrous and slow. All of that is in the quote, so the price on the day is the price Api gave you.
For tight access the sequence is the same with smaller gear: a compact grinder that fits a 750 mm gate, or a mini machine for courtyards. It is slower than the big grinder, but the result is identical — the stump is gone below the surface, not cut flush and left to sprout.

A tip from Api
A stump cut flush is not a stump removed: most species in Delahey gardens will sucker from it, and the roots keep lifting paving. Grinding below the surface is what actually finishes the job.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Delahey?
Homeowners in Delahey ask this more than anything else, so here is Brimbank’s rule as the council publishes it.
Brimbank’s position is that trees on private property are the owner’s to look after; the council does not maintain them and treats disputes about neighbours’ trees as civil matters.
The exception is the Significant Tree Register: trees valued for size, age, health or cultural and environmental importance are recorded there and protected under the Brimbank Local Laws, and interfering with one draws an infringement per tree.
The state canopy-tree clause applies in Brimbank’s residential zones, so check the distance to the boundaries before assuming no permit is needed.

Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

Delahey Stump Removal & Tight Access — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Delahey?
Only if the tree is on Brimbank’s Significant Tree Register, which the local laws protect, or if it is a canopy tree near the front or rear boundary under the state-wide clause. Ordinary garden trees on private land are the owner’s responsibility to manage. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does stump removal cost in Delahey?
Priced per stump, by size and access, no charge for the quote. Removing the grindings and backfilling with soil is a small extra if you want turf straight over the top.
How long does it take?
An hour for a small stump, half a day for a large hardwood. We give you a time window and keep to it.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes. We have never met a stump we could not reach; the narrower the access, the longer it takes, and the quote says so.
What happens to the waste?
Backfilled with the chips, mounded slightly to allow for settling, and the lawn swept. If you would rather have soil, we bring it.
How deep do you grind, and can I plant or pave over the spot?
300 to 400 mm below the surface as standard, deeper if you ask. That is enough for lawn, garden beds and paving. For a new tree in the same spot, ask for the main roots to be chased further out as well.
