Stump removal and tight access in Whittington, done properly
Stumps in Whittington, Thomson, Newcomb and Breakwater and the surrounding suburbs are our bread and butter: quick, clean and priced on the diameter and access rather than on the suburb. Fully insured, led by a qualified arborist, and no regrowth — the grinder takes the crown and the surface roots, not just the top.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Thomson (about a kilometre), Newcomb (2 km), Breakwater (2 km), so a job in Whittington is often paired with one next door.
We measure the stump, check for stones, pipes and cables — Dial Before You Dig where there is any doubt — and set up the grinder. The cutting wheel takes the stump down in passes to 300–400 mm below ground level, then follows the main lateral roots out. The grindings go back into the hole, mounded slightly because they settle, and the surrounding lawn or paving is left clean.
Old, rotten stumps and stumps with a wide root plate — the cypress and pine bases common along Whittington fences — take longer than fresh stumps but grind the same way. Palm stumps are fibrous and slow. All of that is in the quote, so the price on the day is the price Api gave you.

A tip from Api
Do not pour poison down a stump in Whittington and wait: it takes years, it can kill the shrubs around it, and the stump still has to come out in the end. Grinding takes an hour.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Whittington?
Whittington is in the City of Greater Geelong area, and that decides whether a permit is needed before a tree comes down.
Greater Geelong is one of the councils without a private-tree local law: when it reviewed tree protection on private land in 2024 its officers recommended strengthening the planning scheme and asking the state for a state-wide approach rather than a local law or a significant-tree overlay.
That state-wide approach arrived in September 2025 as Clause 52.37. The council publishes its own guide: a canopy tree is more than 5 m tall with a trunk over 0.5 m around at 1.4 m and a canopy of at least 4 m; a permit is needed to remove one anywhere on a vacant residential lot, or within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary where a house already stands. Council officers may assess the application only against the clause’s own purpose and decision guidelines, and a replacement tree — at least 6 m tall and 4 m wide at maturity — is the usual condition.
Vegetation and heritage overlays on the title apply on top, especially along the Barwon and the coast.

Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

Whittington Stump Removal & Tight Access — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Whittington?
Greater Geelong has no local law for trees on private land — its 2024 review chose not to introduce one — so the test is the state canopy-tree clause: a planning permit for a canopy tree on a vacant residential lot, or one near the front or rear boundary of a lot with a house, decided through VicSmart in about ten business days. Overlays on the title still apply. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does stump removal cost in Whittington?
Diameter, count and access. A small stump in an open Whittington yard is our minimum call-out; a large hardwood down a side path is more. Several at once are cheaper each. Api quotes free, often from a photo.
How long does it take?
An hour for a small stump, half a day for a large hardwood. We give you a time window and keep to it.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes. Courtyards, terraces, stumps hard against a fence or wall: standard work in Whittington, and quoted as such.
What happens to the waste?
Grindings in, surplus removed, site tidy. You can also keep the grindings as mulch for the garden beds.
How deep do you grind, and can I plant or pave over the spot?
Below the surface by 300–400 mm, roots chased. Plant, turf or pave the next day; for concrete, have the grindings removed and the hole filled with compacted soil.
