Stump removal and tight access in Harkness, done properly
Stump grinding is quick, tidy and final when it is done properly — which means below ground, roots chased, hole backfilled. That is how we do every stump in Harkness and Kurunjang, Melton and Long Forest, including the ones in courtyards and side passages that other operators turn down.
The nearest suburbs we also cover are Kurunjang (3 km), Melton (4 km), Long Forest (4 km), so a job in Harkness is often paired with one next door.
On the day, the crew protects anything nearby with boards and sheets, checks the ground for stones and services, and grinds the stump in passes until the cutting wheel is 300–400 mm below the surface. The main lateral roots are followed out, the grindings are raked back into the hole and mounded, and the lawn or paving around it is blown clean.
If you plan to build, pave or plant a tree in the same spot, tell Api when he quotes: we can grind deeper, remove the grindings and backfill with soil instead, or take the main roots further out so the ground is ready for what comes next.
Stump Removal & Tight Access in Harkness — what we do
Stump grinding
Down to 300–400 mm below ground, surface roots chased out.
Tight-access grinding
Compact and mini machines for side paths and courtyards.
Large & multi-stem stumps
Mature hardwoods, palms and cypress rows.
Backfill & tidy finish
Grindings back in or removed and replaced with soil.
A tip from Api
If you are going to turf over the spot, ask for the grindings to be taken away and the hole filled with soil. Grindings settle and rob nitrogen; turf laid straight on them sinks and yellows.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Harkness?
Before anything is cut in Harkness, the permit question comes first, and the answer depends on Melton City Council.
Melton sits on the Victorian Volcanic Plain, where only about one per cent of the original grasslands and grassy woodlands survive, so native vegetation is tightly controlled: a planning permit is required from the council to remove, destroy or lop it under Clause 52.17, and inside the Urban Growth Boundary Clause 52.16 and the Native Vegetation Precinct Plans in the estate structure plans apply instead.
Threatened species and habitat can also bring in the Commonwealth EPBC Act. None of that touches a planted exotic in a suburban yard.
What does apply to every residential lot is the state canopy-tree clause — large trees near the street or rear boundary need a planning permit.

Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees
A canopy tree is a tree more than 5 m tall, with a trunk circumference over 0.5 m at 1.4 m above the ground and a canopy at least 4 m across. In a residential zone a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary.
Dead trees, emergency and safety works, maintenance pruning and listed weed species are exempt; councils usually condition a permit on planting a replacement canopy tree, and most decide these through VicSmart in about ten business days.
What this means for you: tell Api where the tree sits on the block and he will tell you whether a permit is needed before anything is cut — and where one is, we can prepare the arborist assessment the application needs.

Harkness Stump Removal & Tight Access — common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Harkness?
For native vegetation, yes — Melton requires a planning permit to remove, destroy or lop it under Clause 52.17 (Clause 52.16 inside the growth areas), and the Commonwealth can be involved on the western grasslands. For a planted exotic tree the state canopy-tree clause is what applies, if the tree is near a boundary in a residential zone. Across Victoria, Clause 52.37 Canopy Trees also applies since 15 September 2025: a planning permit is needed to remove, destroy or lop one in a residential zone if the lot is vacant, or, where there is an existing house, if any part of the trunk is within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. Api checks both at the quote.
How much does stump removal cost in Harkness?
Stump grinding is priced mainly on the stump’s diameter at ground level, how many there are, and the access. A single small stump in an open Harkness front yard is quick; a 900 mm gum stump down a side path is not. Api quotes free, and doing several at once is always cheaper per stump.
How long does it take?
Quick. The grinding is usually done before the morning is out; larger jobs take half a day.
Can you get in if the access is tight?
Yes — tight access is in the name of the page. The compact grinder needs about 750 mm; where the gap is narrower still, we have a mini machine and hand options.
What happens to the waste?
Grindings in, surplus removed, site tidy. You can also keep the grindings as mulch for the garden beds.
How deep do you grind, and can I plant or pave over the spot?
Deep enough that nothing regrows and nothing gets in the way of what you do next — 300–400 mm as a rule. Tell Api what you plan to put there and he will grind to suit.
